The global popularity of mobile phoneapplications (apps) is soaring, new figures have suggested. According to Nokia, its app store, the Ovi Store, is currently witnessing more than one million downloads each day, with a 22 per cent increase in net sales being seen in the final quarter of 2009 compared to the previous three months.
Commenting on the data, Tim Green, executive editor of Mobile Entertainment magazine, said that these apps would not have been so popular had it not been for Apple and its iPhone. He explained that Apple's App store is "very quick, easy to pay for; the whole thing just works and it works for the developers as well."
In addition, he said that the fact Apple has just one handset - the iPhone - makes for a more "unified experience". Some of the most popular apps include music programs such as Pianist and BeatMaker and games like Paper Toss.
