The Nene Washes is managed primarily for breeding waders which involves grazing and mowing to maintain a short and varied sward
The reserve is designated for its important range of breeding and wintering birds including black-tailed godwit, snipe, lapwing, common crane and wigeon.
Seasonal Assistant Warden
Location: Nene Washes, Peterborough
Salary: £25,723.00 - £27,614.00 Per Annum
Benefits: Pension Scheme, Life Assurance Scheme, 26 days' Annual Leave
This is a fixed-term full-time role for 37.5 hours per week for 6 months starting in May 2023
The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
What's the role about?
The purpose of the post is to assist with the day-to-day implementation of the management plan for the reserve – with a focus on tractor work, livestock handling and estate maintenance
Your main duties will include undertaking extensive grass topping through summer, maintaining machinery to ensure it is operating safely and efficiently and helping survey key bird species and habitats.
You will be working as part of a 4-person team managing the 800-hectare RSPB Nene Washes Nature Reserve
You will also be expected to work alone frequently in a remote, physical environment and be able to use your own initiative.
What we need from you:
Essential knowledge, skills and experience:
* Maintenance and use of machinery, tools and equipment [eg tractors, toppers].
* Experience of tractor driving
* Basic knowledge of lowland wet grassland ecology.
* Practical land management experience and delivering estate management works.
* Problem solving and coming up with well thought through practical solutions.
* Working unsupervised for extended periods.
* Manage oneself to prioritise and work to an agreed plan.
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office packages including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:
* Lantra or equivalent qualification in tractor driving, brushcutter and 4x4 off road driving
* Experience of working around cattle.
* Knowledge of wildlife surveying and recording
