We are recruiting for an experienced Lab Technician who has worked in an electronics Laboratory, as you will be providing technical support to an undergraduate teaching laboratory.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Responsible for the set-up and clean-up of teaching sessions, and stock checks after classes as directed by the Lab Manager and/or academic staff.
* Responsible for 4th year group project student orders, ensuring the request aligns with their risk assessment.
* Organise the training and data collection sessions for students to access specialised equipment [e.g
Instron Materials Testing Systems].
* On occasion, deputise for the Teaching Lab Manager in their absence
* Involvement in the development of new laboratory practicals.
* Provide assistance for laboratory sessions led by academic staff.
* Deliver help and advice to all students in the laboratories.
* Support cross-department laboratory teaching work.
* Instruct students on good laboratory and workshop practice, especially the safe operation of the experimental equipment.
* Help ensure the teaching laboratories are operating in line with the established Health and Safety guidelines.
* Provide laboratory supervision for work outside of teaching sessions.
* Provide technical advice for academic and technical staff as well as students.
* To implement procedures for testing and maintenance, to ensure equipment is kept in working order and to provide solutions in the event of equipment failure.
* Maintain stock and materials by monitoring levels and ordering replacements.
* Report any problems to the Laboratory Manager and be proactive in solving them.
* Attend regular meetings, workshops and trainings as required.
* Contribute to the induction and direction of other staff and students as required.
* Prepare new materials and construct equipment for teaching sessions.
* Contribute to the overall activities of the department as required, including open days and other related events.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Evidence of relevant laboratory experience.
Knowledge of electronics testing.
Experience of working independently and using your own initiative.
Experience of working collaboratively as part of a team.
Experience of working with students in a laboratory environment.
Experience of working in an electronics lab, or in other electronics or electrical repair and/or development environment.
Experience in using 3D printer and laser cutter, CNC [desirable].
Demonstrable competence in Computer Aided Design [CAD] [desirable].
Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact with staff at all levels.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build good working relationships.
Excellent Computer literacy and familiarity with the Microsoft suite of software from intermediate to advanced level in Word, Excel, Outlook, diary management and other relevant internet software.
Ability to teach laboratory techniques to students and advise on appropriate use of methodology and methodical problem solving.
