To take a key role in leading and developing the Youth Justice and Liaison provision in the London Borough of Bromley
To provide mental health assessments, identify care pathways and where indicated diversion to individuals within the police custody suites, courts and youth justice services
This will include identifying young people aged under 18 years who are in the youth justice system with mental health problems, conduct disorders, learning disabilities, and neuro-developmental issues or with other vulnerabilities
The role will entail primarily screening young people who have been arrested for an offence and to provide an extensive range of mental health, emotional and social need completing ongoing assessments as required and identifying and referring them on to appropriate interventions to meet the assessed needs
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
The youth justice and liaison post provides specialist pathways for young people in the criminal justice system
The post will be based within the YOS but will be expected to attend the police station and courts as required
The line management will be within the YOS unless the applicant is seconded from another service.
To screen/assess all young people who are detained at the Police Station, in order to assess whether they require further support with any emotional, mental health or social needs
To make contact with those young people who may have been released without a screening taking place, to offer the service in the Community

The emphasis is on screening and providing needs mental health, with this information being used to provide interventions for young people and families and to inform decisions making in the youth justice system.

The screening decision will inform the police/Crown Prosecution Service [CPS] charging decision thus diverting some young people from the criminal justice system or ensuring that there needs are met within it.

To build a good working knowledge of the Mental Health Act in relation to the police, courts and the criminal justice system.

To ensure that all young people referred for Liaison and Diversion are offered timely screening and specialist assessments for mental health problems or other vulnerabilities.

To ensure access to appropriate services to support children and young people referred to Liaison and Diversion scheme
In a holistic way, acting as a care coordinator/lead practitioner, to identify needs and facilitate complex care plans, referring to health and children's social care agencies as required.

To provide information and advice service to young people, their family and professionals on the resources and services available to them.

To provide mental health services to young people in the Youth Offending Service [YOS], this will include comprehensive assessments, referrals to other agencies and at times individual, family or group therapy.

To be part of the YOS virtual health team to share and coordinate health care for young people.

To take a proactive role in ensuring young people engage with services they are referred to and that regular follow ups with these services are undertaken to check progress and cooperation by the young people.

To provide verbal and written feedback to the Court, YOS head of Service, funding provider and others outlining the assessed needs and impact of the work undertaken.
EXPERIENCE
Appropriate and relevant post-qualification experience of children and families social work within a statutory, voluntary or independent sector organisation for example: RMN/Clinical Psychology/Family Therapy qualification or degree relevant to the area of work or equivalent experience
At least 2 years post qualification experience of working with & engaging young people under 18 years in CAMHS and preferably with experience of working with young people who have offended
Team leader experience or management of staff/project skills or experience of liaison or collaboration or multi-agency working at a senior level.
QUALIFICATIONS
Degree, Masters, RMN / Clinical Psychology /, C.Q
S.W., Dip.S.W
Or equivalent and substantial experience as a qualified professional.
Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council.
